Karla Caves: A Glimpse into the Past
The Karla Caves, located on a hillside near Lonavala, are a prominent example of preserved Buddhist rock-cut architecture in India. Constructed over a period spanning from the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE, these caves received financial support from diverse entities, including traders, Western Satraps of Saka origin, and Satavahana rulers. The Grand Chaitya Hall, the largest and most magnificent among early Buddhist prayer halls in India, is the most striking feature of Karla Caves architecture. This hall features a towering stupa at the far end and is lined with intricately carved pillars depicting lions and other figures.
The wooden ribbed ceiling, which has stood the test of time, adds to the architectural brilliance of the cave. The elaborate sculptures of Buddhist deities and inscriptions on the walls narrate stories of faith, devotion, and artistic craftsmanship from a bygone era. A prominent attraction near the Karla Caves is the Ekvira Devi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ekvira, which is still an active place of worship today. Many devotees, especially from the Koli fishing community, visit the temple regularly, making the Karla Caves a blend of history and spirituality.
Bhaja Caves: A Window into Early Buddhist Art
Located about 7 km from Karla Caves, the Bhaja Caves are another significant set of rock-cut caves that date back to 200 BCE. These caves are older than the Karla Caves and offer stunning examples of Buddhist architecture and craftsmanship. The Bhaja Caves consist of 22 rock-cut caves, with the most impressive being the Chaitya Hall, which, like Karla, features a stupa at its centre.
The wooden beam ceiling, though simpler than Karla’s Chaitya Hall, showcases the skilful craftsmanship of the era. The caves are adorned with detailed sculptures of dancing women, musicians, and mythological figures, providing a fascinating insight into the cultural aspects of ancient India. One of the most intriguing features of Bhaja Caves is the group of 14 stupas (Nine outside and five inside). These stupas serve as ancient memorials to Buddhist monks who once lived and meditated here, highlighting the caves' deep spiritual roots.
How to Reach Karla and Bhaja Caves
Both cave sites are easily accessible from Lonavala, making them ideal for a day trip. The caves are conveniently located near the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, with the Karla Caves approximately 11 km from Lonavala and the Bhaja Caves approximately 12 km distant.
By Road: You can drive from Mumbai (96 km) or Pune (60 km) via the Mumbai-Pune Highway.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Lonavala Railway Station, where you can take a taxi or local transport to reach the caves.
